The abihty of water to dissolve a wide variety of substances makes it the ideal medium for fiving organisms. Water s great solvency is also the reason that water pollntion is so pervasive. Almost any substance will dissolve in water, including pesticides, herbicides, industrial waste, household byproducts, and a wide variety of other potentially harmful compounds. Indeed, we rely on the dissolving properties of water to get onr clothes clean. 

Acrolein enters the aquatic environment from its use as an aquatic herbicide, industrial discharges, and as a by-product of the chlorination of organic compounds in wastewater and drinking water treatment. 

The most investigated thioketones have found applications in the pharmaceutical, polymer, pesticide, and herbicide industries. However, there is increasing interest in their photophysic and non-linear electric properties, which make them interesting molecules for fluorescence and phosphorescence spectroscopy, and promising building blocks for non-linear optical materials. Studies concerning the addition of a hydrogen atom to C=S, the environment" and the C NMR for thioketones and selenoketones have been also carried out.
