Henderson studies

June 3, 1978, Lynn, Massachusetts, USA - Feb. 10, 1942 Boston, USA) Henderson studied medicine at Harvard and was Professor of Biological Chemistry at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, from 1904 to 1942 [i]. Henderson published on the physiological role of -> buffers [ii-vii] and the relation of medicine to fundamental science. Because he and also - Hasselbalch made use of the law of mass action to calculate the - pH of solutions containing corresponding acid-base pairs, the buffer equation is frequently (esp. in the biological sciences) referred to as -> Henderson-Hasselbalch equation.

Sokolowski [102,103] and Phschke and Henderson [104,105] have apphed the lOZ equation, with the PY and HNC closures, to hard spheres near a hard wall. Using the HNC and MSA closures, Plischke and Henderson [106-108] have studied charged hard spheres near a charged planar hard wall. The results are very good. In contrast to the results obtained from the OZ equation, the lOZ yields results for p(r) that are nearly independent of the closure. As might be expected, the results for the pair functions are closure dependent and show similar problems to those seen for the RDF with the OZ and similar closures.

As discussed elsewhere in this volume, another field where the use of U-series disequilibria has proven to be very useful is the study of chemical transport in waters, either marine (see Cochran and Masque 2003 Henderson and Anderson 2003), estuarine (Swarzenski et al. 2003) or continental waters. In the continental domain, in addition to characterization of transfer processes related to groundwater flows (Porcelli and Swarzenski 2003), radioactive disequilibria have also helped in constraining chemical exchanges between particulate, dissolved and colloidal loads of waters, as well as the origin of chemical fluxes carried by waters.
