Hemp nitrate

Hemp Nitrate (Nitrohemp) (In French Nitro-chanvre). Nitrohemp resembles cotton nitrocellulose or nitrojute in its properties. It may be prepared by nitrating hemp with mixed nitric-sulfuric acid. Trench (Ref 2) proposed using it as1 a basic ingredient in commercial explosives. Other components were collodion cotton, resin, ozokerite, glycerin etc Ref Daniel (1902), 773... [Pg.61]

Nitromatweed (Matweed Nitrate, Nitrosparte in Fr). Prepd by nitration of dried matweed with mixed nitric-sulfuric acids in a manner similar to the prepn of NC. Trench, Faure and MacKie (Ref 2), in 1876, patented expls containing as a base nitrosparte (or other nitrated cellulosic material such as cotton, hay, agave, hemp, flax, straw, aloe, yucca, etc) together with resin, ozokerite, collodion, glycerin, charcoal and soot. Hengst (Ref 3), in 1898, patented a smokeless powd containing nitrosparte prepd by nitration of fibers covering the coconut shell Refs 1) Merriam Webster s Diet, 2nd Ed (1963), ... [Pg.63]

Hemp Fiber (Chanvre in French). The bast-fiber obtained from the plant Cannabis indica or C sativa, which is a perennial herb (Ref 1). The plant is native of western and central Asia, but has long been cultivated in Brazil and tropical Africa, and is now extensively cultivated in many countries. Its fiber is used for preparation of ropes and paper, but was also proposed by Trench (Ref 2), in 1877 to be nitrated to an explosive Refs 1) Daniel (1902), 773 2) Webster s 7th New Collegiate Diet (1969), 388... [Pg.61]

Miccia a lenta combustione — Slow Fuse, such as Safety Fuse. The core of Italian fuse consisted of K nitrate 60, beech charcoal 25, hemp charcoal 5 Fe oxide 10% (Ref 31, p 523). [Pg.426]

Lignin Nitrate (Nitrolignin). A general term employed to designate nitrated products contg lignin, such as wood, straws, jute, esparto grass, flax and hemp fibers (Ref 1)... [Pg.573]

Foure, Mackie Trench patented in 1873 in England an expl based on NC to which were added rosin, lacquer, ozokerite, collodion, glycerin, and charcoal or soot. The same inventors patented in 1876 expls in which NC was substituted by nitrated sainfoin, esparto grass, agave, hemp, flax, straw, hay, Amer aloe and yucca Ref Daniel (1902), 295 773 (Trench, Faure et Mackie)... [Pg.391]

Bast or Bass is the fibrous inner bark of linden, lime and some milkweed trees. It is used for ropes, mats, peasant shoes(such as Rus"lapti"). The term blast fiber is applied to fibers obtained from the inner bark of flax, hemp, jute, ramie, etc. They contain a considerable amt of cellulose and can be nitrated to NC. However, these substances are more valuable as fabric materials than as sources of NC. Ramie has been used in France for prepn of pure NC Ref J.T.Marsh F.C.Wood, "An Introduction to the Chemistry of Cellulose",Chapman Hall, London( 1945), 1,3 12... [Pg.25]

Paulownia charcoal. A light powder, which is easily scattered and has an apparent specific gravity of 0.12 g/cc. This value is the lowest for all the kinds of charcoal at present available. The dye adsorption power in water lies between pine charcoal, and hemp coal which has the largest. One analysis showed that it contained. 9% moisture and 2.5% ash. The pH value of the wash water(5 grams of charcoal / 30cc of water) was 7 5 A mixture of the paulownia charcoal, sulphur and potassium nitrate burns as well as the pine charcoal, but it produces less fire dust than the pine charcoal. [Pg.119]

A black fine powder which has a somewhat hygroscopic feeling. The apparent specific gravity is 0.22g/cc. The dye adsorption power is the largest of all the kinds of plant coal. A mixture of hemp coal, sulphur and potassium nitrate burns to produce a violet flame and less fire dust than pine charcoal. It is used to obtain a large force of explosion as a component of black powder or in combination with potassium chlorate or perchlorate for the bursting charge of chrysanthemum shells. [Pg.120]
