Hemicellulose effect

Derivatives of hemicellulose components have properties similar to the ceUulosic equivalents but modified by the effects of thek lower molecular weight, more extensive branching, labile constituents, and more heterogeneous nature. Acetates, ethers, carboxymethylxylan (184), and xylan—poly(sodium acrylate) (185) have been prepared. [Pg.34]

Some hemicelluloses are partiaUy extractable with water, but they are usuaUy extracted with alkaline solutions foUowing removal of Upids and lignin. DeUgnifted plant material is termed, holoceUulose. Neutralization of the alkaline extract effects precipitation of the more linear and less acidic hemicelluloses, termed the hemiceUulose A [63100-39-0] fraction. The more acidic and more branched material, termed hemiceUulose B [63100-40-3], is precipitated with ethanol (70%). HemiceUulose B types type are usuaUy water-soluble after extraction. [Pg.484]

During the past decade, MALDI-TOF MS has proven to be an effective tool for the analysis of oligo- and polymeric mannoglucans (for extensive reviews see [222,223]). SEC/MALDI mass spectrometry was employed in the analysis of hemicelluloses isolated by microwave heat-fractionation from spruce and aspen wood [94]. These methods allowed the separation and characterization of the oligo- and polysaccharide fractions derived from the xylan and mannan components of both woods [224]. [Pg.29]

Since many years, pectolytic enzymes have been widely used in industrial beverage processing to improve either the quality and the yields in fruit juice extraction or the characteristics of the final product [1,2]. To this purpose, complex enzymatic mixtures, containing several pectolytic enzymes and often also cellulose, hemicellulose and ligninolytic activities, are usually employed in the free form. The interactions among enzymes, substrates and other components of fruit juice make the system very difficult to be investigated and only few publications are devoted to the study of enzymatic pools [3-5], An effective alternative way to carry out the depectinisation process is represented by the use of immobilized enzymes. This approach allows for a facile and efficient enzymatic reaction control to be achieved. In fact, it is possible to avoid or at least to reduce the level of extraneous substances originating from the raw pectinases in the final product. In addition, continuous processes can be set up. [Pg.971]

MgS04 as stabilizers, and are non-selective in degrading also cellulose and hemicelluloses, while the reductant 820/ is more selective but less effective, and generates various sulfur-containing chemicals including thiosulfate that is corrosive to paper machines (3). [Pg.7]

Usually it is considered that xylan has been effectively removed if the extracted residue compares in composition to a-cellulose. Yet, even a-cellulose contains small amounts of xylan as well as other hemicelluloses such as mannan.67 69 Beta and 7-cellulose are mixtures which contain pentosans along with other alkali-soluble extractives.1M0... [Pg.288]

Figure 1.15 gives an overview of the main constituents of non food biomass. There are three components Cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. Cellulose and hemicellulose are built form sugar-type monomers, but their cost-effective isolation through enzymatic depolymerization remains a challenge. [Pg.18]

Endoxylanase produced by a transformant strain of Escherichia coli has been shown to decrease the kappa number and increase the brightness of pulp in an enzymatic pretreatment followed by chemical extraction (27). Beta-xylosidase, on the other hand, had no effect in the treatment. The mannanase produced by Bacillus suhtilis was found to be equally effective as the xylanase. The specificities of mannanases produced by two different organisms, however, differed considerably 49). Enrichment of the culture broth of Streptomyces olivochromogenes, containing mainly endoxylanase, with different pure enzymes or enzyme mixtures acting on side chains and other hemicelluloses, resulted only in slight increases in brightness and in kappa number reduction (55). [Pg.17]

The apparent difference between viscosity average (M ) and number average molecular weight (M ) for unfractionated triacetate samples and high molecular weight fractions may be attributed to the presence of hemicellulose and polydispersity effect in these materials as shown in the table in question and in Figure 3. [Pg.371]
