Heat categories

Let me make a case against Capital Punishment. I tried it and I didn t like it. I would venture to say that few among you would. It was rated at one hundred thousand Scoville units, which, you should know, places this hot-pepper sauce roughly in the same heat category as glowing charcoal. Chomping on glowing charcoal may actually have been more pleasant.

This category comprises conventional LPG (commercial propane and butane), home-heating oil and heavy fuels. All these materials are used to produce thermal energy in equipment whose size varies widely from small heaters or gas stoves to refinery furnaces. Without describing the requirements in detail for each combustion system, we will give the main specifications for each of the different petroleum fuels. 

A tremendous variety of structures is known, and some of the three-dimensional network ones are porous enough to show the same type of swelling phenomena as the layer structures—and also ion exchange behavior. The zeolites fall in this last category and have been studied extensively, both as ion exchangers and as gas adsorbents (e.g.. Refs. 185 and 186). As an example, Goulding and Talibudeen have reported on isotherms and calorimetric heats of Ca -K exchange for several aluminosilicates [187]. 

Another category Ic indole synthesis involves cyclization of a-anilino aldehydes or ketones under the influence of protonic or Lewis acids. This corresponds to retro.synthetic path d in Scheme 4.1. Considerable work on such reactions was done in the early 1960s by Julia and co-workers. The most successful examples involved alkylation of anilines with y-haloacetoacetic esters or amides. For example, heating IV-substituted anilines with ethyl 4-bromoacetoacetate followed by cyclization w ith ZnClj gave indole-3-acetate esterfi]. Additional examples are given in Table 4.3. 

Protective Coatings. Some flame retardants function by forming a protective Hquid or char barrier. These minimize transpiration of polymer degradation products to the flame front and/or act as an insulating layer to reduce the heat transfer from the flame to the polymer. Phosphoms compounds that decompose to give phosphoric acid and intumescent systems are examples of this category (see Flame retardants, phosphorus flame retardants). 

Petroleum refining, also called petroleum processing, is the recovery and/or generation of usable or salable fractions and products from cmde oil, either by distillation or by chemical reaction of the cmde oil constituents under the effects of heat and pressure. Synthetic cmde oil, produced from tar sand (oil sand) bitumen, and heavier oils are also used as feedstocks in some refineries. Heavy oil conversion (1), as practiced in many refineries, does not fall into the category of synthetic fuels (syncmde) production. In terms of Hquid fuels from coal and other carbonaceous feedstocks, such as oil shale (qv), the concept of a synthetic fuels industry has diminished over the past several years as being uneconomical in light of current petroleum prices.
