Health and Aging

Which would you rather have as you approach retirement health or wealth What good would it be to have carefully planned and saved to be financially secure in retirement and then be in such poor health that you can t enjoy it Fortunately, you don t have to choose between the two. 

Normal, healthy aging affects your vanity more than it does your ability to function. Your skin wrinkles, your hair turns gray, your hairline recedes, you can t see things up close, and you don t heal as quickly. Also, as you become older your muscles stiffen and the connective tissues become less elastic. Healthy aging may slow you down, but it doesn t stop you. 

Fortunately, even if you have neglected your health, you can start now to plan a lifestyle that takes you into a healthier retirement. How well you ve taken care of yourself determines how much change may be required in your daily routine. This includes such things as proper eating habits, exercise, sleep, smoking, drinking, and the amount of stress you experience. Complete the following exercise to evaluate your current health practices.

The blood is generally warmed to 37 °C immediately prior to transfusion. Whole blood is often used to replace blood lost due to injury or surgery. The number of units (one unit equals approximately 510 ml) administered depends upon the health and age of the recipient, along with the therapeutic indication. Administration of whole blood may also be undertaken to supply a recipient with a particular blood constituent (e.g. a clotting factor, immunoglobulin, platelets or red blood cells). However, this practice is minimized, in favour of direct administration of the specific blood constituent needed.
