Figure 12-8A. Piston rings. The piston rod is manufactured from heat-treated stainless steel and is coated with wear-resistant overlays, such as ceramic, chromium oxide, and tungsten carbide applied by plasma techniques. Piston rod cross-head attachment has mechanical preloading system for the threads. Rider rings and seal rings are manufactured from PTFE filled resins fillers are matched to the gas, piston speed, and liner specifications. Typical fillers are glass, carbon, coke, or ceramic. The initial studies of LSDAs were carried out with oleochemicals because of their structural similarity to soap. However, since the molecular structure of an efficient LSDA is characterized by a bulky hydrophilic polar head attached to a long hydrophobic tail, it is also possible to prepare LSDAs from petrochemicals. Sulfated sulfonamide derivatives of alkylbenzenes, such as commercially available detergent alkylates, were synthesized as follows [17] ... [Pg.634]

We have designed PBUILD, a new CHEMLAB module, for easy construction of random copolymers. A library of monomers has been developed from which the chemists can select a particular sequence to generate a polymeric model. PBUILD takes care of all the atom numbering, three dimensional coordinates, and knows about stereochemistry (tacticity) as well as positional isomerism (head to tail versus head to head attachment). The result is a model of the selected polymer (or more likely a polymer fragment) in an all trans conformation, inserted into the CHEMLAB molecular workspace in literally a few minutes. [Pg.34]

A knowledge of the relationship between the loss of 14.5 nm meridional intensity and the actual number of attaching heads would be very useful indeed as a measure of head attachment in other situations, e.g. in the ATP jump experiments described in the next section. Since the high frequency stiffness, thought to be a measure of the... [Pg.18]

When anionic and cationic surfactants are mixed they strongly interact, and it could even be said that they almost react to produce a catanionic species, which is essentially a new surfactant, in which the two hydrophilic groups have merged into a nonionic or a somehow amphoteric head attached to a double tail. The first consequence is that the new daughter species has... [Pg.103]

Myosin head attaches to actin filament, causing release of P ... [Pg.186]

Figure 19-12 (A) Stereoscopic views of computer-assisted reconstructions of images of myosin heads attached to an F-actin filament centered between two thick filaments. Atomic structures of actin (Fig. 7-10) and of myosin heads (Fig. 19-15) have been built into the reconstructed images obtained by electron microscopy. (A) With the nonhydrolyzable ATP analog ATPPNP bound in the active sites. (B) Rigor. Two myosin heads are apparently bound to a single actin filament in (A). If they belong to the same myosin molecule the two C-terminal ends must be pulled together from the location shown here. In (B) a third head is attached, presumably from another myosin rod. This configuration is often seen in rigor. From Winkler et al.13i Courtesy of K. A. Taylor. Chemical Fire Starters Devices intended for starting fires under adverse climatic conditions, such as in wet jungles or on snow -covered terrain. The Ml fire starter is a cylindrical NC container 1.25 in diam by 3.25 in length filled with 0.8oz of kerosene thickened to a gel and provided with an ignition device, consisting of a match-head attached to a disk which covers the filling. A scratcher is attached inside a metal cap which covers the match head of the fire starter. The cap is fastened to the container with adhesive tape(Ref, pp 51-4 ... [Pg.568]

Operational problems with high water transfer to paper during surface sizing and pond instability have led to the development of pre-metered size presses. Two design options are being used in modem high-speed paper machines pre-metering rolls or short-dwell coater heads attached to the size press.186187... [Pg.690]

In this experiment, the method of Flory and Leutner will be used to determine the fraction of head-to-head attachments in a single sample of PVOH. The method depends on the fact that in PVOH a head-to-head linkage is a 1,2-glycol structure, and 1,2-glycols can be specifically and quantitatively cleaved by periodic acid or periodate ion. Treatment of PVOH with periodate should therefore break the chain into a number of fragments, bringing about a corresponding decrease in the effective molar mass. All that is required is a measurement of the molar mass of a specimen of PVOH before and after treattnent with periodate. [Pg.319]
