Hawthorn extracts purportedly dilate coronary blood vessels, decrease blood pressure, increase myocardial contractility, and lower serum cholesterol (9). Benefits have been demonstrated in patients with heart failure (10). Bahorun and colleagues describe the use of thin-layer chromatography (TLC) to determine total proanthocynidins, phenol, and flavonoid content of hawthorn extracts. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis using a UV detector at 280 nm for proanthocyanidins and phenolic acids, and 360 nm for flavonoids is also described (Bahorun et al., 1996). 

Various h bs and supplements such as hawthorn extracts garlic, onion, ginkgo biloba, vitamin and aspirin, maybe used by herbalists for hypertension. Although these sub ances may lo w blood pressure in some individuals their use is not recommended because the fect is ight and usually too gentle to affect mod ate to sev e hypertension. Howev, several studies have demonstrated that hypertensive patients may benefit from daily doses of calcium (800 mg) or magnesium (300 mg).
