Because the gin capacity is usually not sufficient to keep up with the harvesters, the harvested cotton is often stored in a compacted module and ginned at a later date. The type of storage or seed cotton processing may place additional constraints on the harvest process. If the seed cotton is to be placed in module storage, the cotton should not be harvested until the moisture content is 12% or less and the harvested seed cotton should be free of green plant material such as leaves and grass. [Pg.309]

There is very little information on cultivar differences with respect to (i) resistance to infection by P. verrucosum and (ii) OTA formation (Hokby et al., 1979 Axberg el al., 1997). The latter performed a laboratory experiment with six artificially inoculated cultivars of barley and three of wheat. After incubation for 23 weeks at approximately 19% moisture, the barley cultivars contained between 6 and 350 and the wheat cultivars between 25 and 890 ng OTA g 1 grain. In another study, Elmholt and Rasmussen (2005) reported that two of four cultivars of spring spelt from the same field contained 18 and 92 ng OTA g 1, respectively, while the other two contained less than 0.5 ng OTA g As differences in OTA neither correlated with moisture content at harvest nor with the level of P. verrucosum, they were probably caused by differences in cultivar sensitivity. This should, however, be further studied. [Pg.368]

Quick and effective drying is crucial if the grain is harvested with moisture contents above 18%. The need increases with increasing moisture content. [Pg.379]

High moisture content is the single biggest problem that arises because of improper harvesting. Cocke (23) concluded that cotton harvested at high moisture content was extremely difficult... [Pg.14]

The moisture content of the morama bean is very low as the dry matter (dm) content ranges from 93.4% to 98.7% (Bower et al., 1988 Holse et ah, 2010 Wehmeyer et ah, 1969). Variations may arise from external factors such as soil composition, climate, harvest time, and maturation state of the beans. [Pg.196]

Argentina, Brazil, China, and the United States produce the worlds largest supply of soybeans. In the United States, the midwestem soybean harvest begins in September and October when the moisture content of the soybean is 13%. These beans can be stored for about one year. Soybeans with less than 12% moisture can be stored for two years or more. Higher-moisture-content beans must be aerated and dried in bins before being shipped by truck, rail, or barge for storage in elevators or silos. [Pg.285]

The corn kernel is a one-seeded fruit classified as a grain,22 borne on a female inflorescence commonly known as the ear. Each ear is comprised of a central stem, the cob, on which up to 1000 seeds develop. The seeds (kernels) mature about 60 days after pollination and are harvested in late summer or early fall (in the northern hemisphere) when kernel moisture content has dropped below 30% (wet weight basis). [Pg.376]

Sagrero-Nieves and Schwartz (1988) studied the phenolic content of vanilla, vanillic acid and 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (HBA) in V. planifolia with respect to the harvest period of beans (August-December). The moisture content of the beans decreased from 87.6 to 81.4%. Vanillic acid remained constant and both vanillin and HBA... [Pg.290]

The best time to harvest the bamboo in order to obtain the best performance, such as strength and natural moisture content... [Pg.249]

Harvest Period. Wang reported also (2) that bamboo should be harvested from late summer to mid-autumn because the natural moisture content of the bamboo is lowest then. Since the bamboo has not absorbed additional moisture from the ground, the swelling and shrinkage characteristics in the bamboo culm are at a minimum. [Pg.255]

The best time of the year to harvest bamboo is from late summer to mid-autumn, because at that time the natural moisture content of the bamboo, and therefore the swell-shrinking potential, is also low. [Pg.260]
