Historic herbal texts can be considered both works of art and troves of information. Many of the original copies of the texts still available were hand copied and corrected as deemed necessary by the transcriptionist [21]. Frequently, the images accompanying the text descriptions were ornately hand painted. Often, these images contain such intricate detail that it is possible to accurately identify the genus and species of the plant described. For example, Figure 4.2 shows the illustration of the common pineapple from the 400-year-old Ambonese Herbal. 

The same might be said of ordinary house paint. Paint that has a low resistance to flow is runny and will likely not provide satisfactory coverage of a wall with just one coat. It is therefore judged to be of poorer quality than one that does provide good one-coat coverage. On the other hand, paint that is thick and gummy may also be judged to be of poorer quality because it may not be possible to apply it uniformly with either a brush or roller. 

Hand-painting gives a cake an artisanal touch and sets it apart from traditional fancy cakes. I mix metallic or luster dust with clear alcohol to create a paint that I use for vines and branches. You can also use this paint for other details, such as small dots along the cake edges, hand-painted leaves, or small dashes in iridescent dust if you make sugar-paste butterflies—to show them fluttering around ... 

In 1703-1704 in Amsterdam the Atlas of the Don River, Azov and Black Seas prepared by Admiral K. Kruis was published. It comprised descriptions and 17 maps. The maps were made by the cartographic materials collected during sea voyages of the ship Krepost in 1699. The maps showed depths, shoals, inflowing rivers, harbors, and cities. All maps were hand-painted. This atlas is considered the first significant work of Russia cartography. 

Painting-Printing Techniques. The calligraphic brush stroke is a painting characteristic unique to Chinese hand-painted silks.

A further wave of prosperity followed the improvement in transport by the development of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canals, and then ensued a period when public taste demanded goods of high artistic merit, and japanned tea-trays, tea-caddies, ccfal-vases, and other goods were produced, cleverly decorated with hand-painted designs and scenes by artists of repute.

Hand painting allows coating to be apphed wherever desired with no setup time and low equipment cost. It is still the preferred method for touching up thin spots in a bulk applied... 

The lime used was Fort Adams unground lime. It was slaked to powder by the affusion of one-third its bulk of water, and allowed to stand several days. As it was about to be used, it was reduced to paste and passed through a hand paint-mill, by which it was made very fine. It should be borne in mind that this lime is slightly hydraulic.
