Halogenated Hydrocarbon Use Profiles

Methylene chloride is used in many paint and varnish stripping formulations, as a solvent for cold cleaning of metal parts, as an extraction solvent for heat sensitive substances, as an extraction media for pharmaceutical products, as a solvent to clean polyurethane molding equipment, as an auxiliary blowing agent for flexible polyurethane foam, and as a solvent in the manufacture of [Pg.216]

The primary uses of 1,2-dichloroethane (ethylene dichloride), 1,1-di-chloroethane, chloroform, and carbon tetrachloride are as feed stocks for the production of chlorinated and fluorinated hydrocarbons. Ethylene dichloride is used in the preparation of protein concentrates and in the extraction of natural oils. Chloroform is a chemical intermediate in the manufacture of plastic, dyes, resins, and fire extinguishing products. It is used as an extraction solvent for various pharmaceutical products as well as a reactant in the preparation of analgesics and anthelmintic drugs. Miscellaneous uses of carbon tetrachloride include synthesis of organic chemicals, dyes, drugs, and lubricants. [Pg.217]

2-TrichIorotrifluoroethane also is being phased out as a cold and vapor degreasing cleaning solvent due its known ability for ozone depletion this has encouraged the development of new fluorinated hydrocarbons. These new solvents will be discussed in the physical property section. [Pg.218]
