Habitable Universe

Today, there are many eminent researchers on materials in Japan, alike in universities and in various national research institutes, and latterly in Tsukuba Science City - but the Tohoku Institute has always held a special place, owing to the energy, determination and organising ability of its founder and the habits of work which he instilled in his staff. 

In which development phase of the universe could there have been the greatest chance of panspermia processes taking place A research group from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Research has tried to provide answers to this difficult question on the basis of research results from astronomy and astrophysics. Using mathematical models, they concluded that the maximum number of habitable planets in our galaxy must have been present at the time when our solar system and the young Earth were evolving (von Bloh et al., 2003).

Even after his official retirement form the University of Florida faculty in 1992, he and his wife Karin continued to travel between Uppsala and Gainesville. It was the formation of stars and then second-generation stars (such as our sun) with rocky planets that made life as we know it possible. Entropy still applied, yet the Universe became habitable in the period (which continues today) succeeding that first eon when it would have seemed entropic death was already gripping the Universe. Life was made possible by the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements and the condensation of solids and formation of planets where aqueous fluids could exist.
