Guidelines for Setting Goals

Ask employees to choose a celebration for achieving the goal from a list of two or three options. 

Ask observers to focus on the new target practice with observation and feedback. 

Schedule the celebration as soon as the goal is met. Recognize individuals for working toward the goal even before it is met and especially during the celebration. 

Recognize individuals who implement recommended interventions (e.g., maintenance staff, engineers, trainers, and managers). 

Review all safety data at regular steering committee meetings to identify checklist practices to be targeted by improvement projects or process measures to be addressed, such as percentage of participation.
