Uric acid is a product of the metabolism of tire animal organism. It is usually prepared from guano, which is ticatcd first with dilute hydrochloric acid to remove phosphate of calcium. While metal-nitrogen and metal-oxygen bonded compounds dominate nucleobase coordination chemistry, examples in which metal-carbon bonds are formed have been identified. Early studies on the synthesis of metal-labeled DNA demonstrated that nucleotide-triphosphates, UTP, CTP, dUTP, and dCTP, can undergo mercury modification at C5 (82,83). The UTP derivative was also shown to act as a substrate for RNA polymerase in the presence of mercaptans (83). The fact that Germany depended on imported fertilizer more than any other country gave it a special stake in the problem, too. Several complexes that involve intercalation of an acridine in a portion of a nucleic acid have been studied by X-ray crystallographic techniques. For comparison an example of the situation before such intercalation is also illustrated in Figure 6 (a) by three adjacent base pairs found in the crystal structure of a polynucleotide (72, 73).
