Growth modes studies

The different growth modes discussed above have been exemplified also from structural studies. Froment and Lincot [247] used structural characterization methods, such as TEM and HRTEM, to determine the formation mechanisms and habits of chemically deposited CdS, ZnS, and CdSe thin film at the atomic level. These authors formulated reaction schemes for the different deposition mechanisms and considered that these should be distinguished to (a) atom-by-atom process, providing autoregulation in normal systems (b) aggregation of colloids (precipitation) ...

But also the other coinage elements have been studied intensively, although here the results depend much less sensitively on the approximate or exact description that is used for the interatomic interactions. Among those is Ag. Clusters of Ag were studied by Baletto et alP who used a molecular-dynamics method to determine the stable structures for selected cluster sizes with up to almost 600 atoms. In order to identify the crystal-growth modes, they used the common-neighbour analysis (Section 3.5) in distinguishing between icosahe-dral, decahedral, and fcc-like motifs. From their analysis they were also able to propose a cluster-growth mechanism. 

Much effort has been devoted during the last 30 years toward understanding the mechanisms operative in the coordination catalysis of ethylene and a-olefin polymerization using Ziegler-Natta systems (metal halide and aluminum alkyl, sometimes with Lewis base modifiers). Aspects of the complex heterogeneous reactions have been elucidated (jL- ) but the intimate mechanistic detail - for example the role of inhibitors and promoters, kinetics and thermodynamics of chain growth, modes of chain transfer and termination - comes primarily from studies of homogeneous catalysts ...
