When peptides with subtle differences in hydrophobicity are being separated, nonionic surfactants may provide a better balance between the electrostatic and hydrophobic forces influencing the separation. Polyoxyethylene-10 (20 mM) has been found useful for separating two analogues of growth hormone-releasing peptide (composed of six amino acids) with the same mass-to-charge ratio. 

The author and a co-worker later exploited 3 mm NMR probe capabilities in a study of the thermal degradation products of the oxazolidinone antibiotic Zyvox (linezolid, 41) based on the use of H-15N heteronuclear shift correlation experiments.127 In a study of the structure-function relationships of a new growth hormone-releasing peptide, ghrelin, Bednarek and co-workers128 at Merck utilized micro-probe capabilities in the characterization of the structures of the minimum sequence of ghrelin necessary for activity. As a result of these efforts, a small spiroindan, MK-0677 (59) with oral bioavailability was found to be one of the most potent synthetic analogs with this activity.

Overall, nutrition therapy is a component of medical treatment that includes oral, enteral, and parenteral nutrition (PN). However, a meta-analysis provided no evidence that nutritional support has a significant effect on anthropometric measures, lung function, or exercise capacity in patients with stable COPD (25,26). By contrast, repeated administration of ghrelin, a novel growth hormone- releasing peptide that is reduced in COPD (27), may improve body composition, muscle wasting, and functional capacity in cachectic patients with COPD, thus possibly reversing some of the systemic aspects of COPD (28).
