Grounding practices method selection

In this chapter we attempt to survey the present state of the art. In Section 4.B. a distinction is made between the problems, where the role of the correlation energy is small and those where it is of crucial importance. As regards the calculations beyond the Hartree-Fock limit there is a large variety of computational methods. We selected those that, in our opinion, are the most suitable for practical purposes or that yield perspectives for further development. The theoretical back-round of the methods is intentionally suppressed. Instead, emphasis is laid on the fundamental idea on which the theory is based, the numerical feasibility, cost, the portion of the correlation energy recovered and reliability in chemical applications. The whole chapter is oriented to ground states. [Pg.72]

Assessment of individual differences (or average response profiles for certain tasks) in applied environments generally seeks an empirically based answer to practical questions. Such objectives include monitoring and self-monitoring of performance, evaluation of mental and physical load and overload, selection and classification of personnel, detection of health risks, and evaluation of risk behavior. Especially when costly psychophysiological methods are involved, the empirical validity and, more importantly, the incremental validity (as compared to data already available) has to be discussed on theoretical grounds within the framework of cost-benefit analyses. [Pg.114]

The key role of case studies is highlighted in several recent seminal papers on geotechnical education, e.g. Jaksa (2008), Phillips (2008), Rogers (2008), Jaksa et al. (2009). Case histories allow students to appreciate the complexity and full context of a real design situation which involves the ground, the structure and the construction method. Case histories show the simplifications and assumptions that need to be made in practice. They also show the tests that are used to obtain the different soil parameter values and how the values of soil parameters values are selected in practice. The seleetion of ease histories for a particular course should respeetthe eompetencies of the students... [Pg.106]
