Water has been shown to be an effective solvent in some chemical reactions such as free radical bromination. Supercritical fluids such as liquified carbon dioxide are already commonly used in coffee decaffeination and hops extraction. However, supercritical carbon dioxide can also be used as a replacement for organic solvents in polymerization reactions and surfactant production. Future work may involve solventless or neat reactions such as molten-state reactions, dry grind reactions, plasma-supported reactions, or solid materials-based reactions that use clay or zeolites as carriers. [Pg.333]

As early as in the fourth century BC, native cinnabar was rubbed with vinegar in a copper mortar with a copper pestle yielding the liquid metal, that is, mercury [19]. This is probably the most ancient documented chemical recipe and describes a mechanochemical reaction, a chemical reaction that is induced by the direct absorption of mechanical energy [20]. A small amount of hquid accelerates or even enables mechanochemical reactions between solids. Mechanochemical grinding reactions are known for providing a pathway to products that are not accessible by any other procedures due to the essentially solid reaction environment. In the context of solid-state tautomerism, the mechanochemistry has recently almost become an unavoidable technique, yielding new tautomeric forms as in the case of the keto form of thiobarbituric acid [25] or the enol form of barbituric acid [78]. Useful thermosetting resins are obtained by interaction of furfural with phenol. The reaction occurs under both acidic and basic catalysis. Other large uses of furfural together with phenol are in the manufacture of resin-bonded grinding wheels and coated abrasives (5). [Pg.79]

Exposure to PTFE can arise from ingestion, skin contact, or inhalation. The polymer has no irritating effect to the skin, and test animals fed with the sintered polymer have not shown adverse reactions.
