Grey rot

FIGURE 9.6 Berries of the Corvina variety attacked by grey rot (Torriani et al., 2009). [Pg.294]

A layer of straw is placed beneath the strawberry plants to make sure that the fruits stay clean and to prevent the spread of grey rot and rhizome rot [Phytophthora cactorum). In addition the straw conserves soil moisture (this can also be a disadvantage), suppresses weeds and makes it easier to move around. The straw (80-100 kg/acre) is put down just before the fruits touch the soil. If this job is carried out before or during flowering, there is an increased risk of damage from late frost (because the soil is... [Pg.78]

Under rain shelters, bush fruits are at least partially protected from various diseases (e.g. grey rot) (see Fig. 3.5). In addition, plants that are covered by a shelter produce fruits with better keeping quality, and the time of picking, as in the case of currants for example, can be postponed to some extent. The disadvantages of rain shelters are the very high installation costs, the relatively high consumption of energy and resources in manufacture, and the adverse effect on the landscape. [Pg.80]

Classic exterminators of field rodents are zinc phosphide (ZnjPj) and calcium phosphide (CUjPj), dark grey powders with the smell of rotting fish. These compounds are insoluble in water but, by the action of water, hydrogen phosphide, phosphine (HjP), is formed, and this exerts the toxic action in the stomachs of rodents (Chefurka et al., 1976). [Pg.262]

Pea wilt - Fusarium wilt Fungus In late May/June, lower leaves tend to turn grey before rolling downwards. All leaves eventually affected. Death of plant either before podding or before pods have swollen. White mycehum appears on stem after death. The pathogen is soil-bome. It invades the plant and only returns to the soil from the infected dead plant material. (1) Rotation (2) Use resistant varieties Note There are other Fusarium species, notably root rot... [Pg.143]
