Green urine

The hallmark for tetralin exposure in humans is the production of green urine. Two painters who used tetralin-containing varnishes in a poorly ventilated area had intense irritation of the mucous membranes, profuse lacrimation, headache, stupor, and the characteristic green urine. Hospital patients on a ward whose floor had been waxed with a tetralin-based polish experienced similar symptoms including eye irritation, headache, nausea, diarrhea, and green urine. Asthenia also was observed in subjects who had slept in rooms waxed with a tetralin-based polish. 

Patients on TCAs should be aware that they may experience symptoms such as photosensitivity or blue-green urine... 

Both arms of the structure can be metabolized, leading to mono- or dicarboxylic acid metabolites (Fig. 42.20), which are excreted as the glucuronide conjugate. The conjugated metabolites are an intense, dark blue in color and will result in blue-green urine. The whites of the eyes and, in some cases, the skin also may take on a bluish cast. 

A 37-year-old man developed green urine after taking several tablets of flupirtine daily his serum concentration of flupirtine was very high, at 22 mg/1 (usual target range 0.5-1.5 m ) [49 ].

Urinary tract There have been two reports of propofol-associated green urine [87, 88" ]. 

A 53-year-old man with liver cirrhosis had a large upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage and was given propofol 100 mg for induction of anesthesia 1 hour later he was noted to have green urine. No other medications or recent food could have caused this. 

A 40-year-old man who was given a propofol infusion after trauma developed green urine after 4 days his urine returned to normal within 24 hours of propofol withdrawal.

Against these inconsistencies must be set the substantial body of evidence reviewed in SED VIII showing (a) a similar neurological illness in animals dosed with clioquinol, (b) a possible dose relationship in man with the visual disturbance, and (c) the green urine found in the syndrome, containing chelated quinolines. Despite these findings, clioquinol still appears to be widely promoted and employed as a supposed remedy for diarrhoea, especially in developing countries (30).
