Green Stripe

Both tilt domains in the green stripe texture switch to the same ferroelectric state in this process, thus causing the stripes to disappear. The anticlinic structure is SmA-like in the sense that the average optic axis is along the layer... [Pg.499]

A dramatic illustration of this patterning of lesions was reported by Balzer and Gauchery (1899). Their patient presented with lesions on his feet which appeared in regularly spaced parallel bands. On questioning the patient, it was discovered that the patient owned a pair of socks with transverse black, red, green, and yellow stripes. The bands of lesions corresponded to where the black and green stripes rested on the foot, and the clear skin bands to where the red and yellow stripes rested on the foot. [Pg.630]

The color of the semiconductor in your computer chip or the color of your implanted biomaterial or pharmaceutical tablet is of little consequence. The color of your toothpaste, face cream, beverage, or food is another matter. Consumers are used to the manufactured brands of brilliant white toothpaste with blue, red, or green stripes. Brown is not a popular color for bathroom products (see the handbook review Porous Silicon for Oral Hygiene and Cosmetics ). There are brown and even black popular foodstuffs - think of bread, peanuts, cereals, chocolate, coffee, and marmite (see handbook chapter Porous Silicon and Functional Foods ). However, these are in the minority, and once again the consumer associates specific foods with specific colors. [Pg.100]

Green, green-black or green-striped varieties, such as Zucchini and Italian Marrow, are elongated-cylindricalin shape. [Pg.985]

In addition, and most importantly, samples of typical B2 materials always seem to exhibit minority domains which behave quite differently from the stripe domains. Specifically, at zero field these minority domains have the lower An green birefringence color and show a smooth SmA-like focal conic... [Pg.493]

Figure 12.9 Endothelial cell-specific nuclear import of plasmids. Growth-arrested African Green Monkey kidney epithelial cells (TC7), human pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (HSMCs) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUYECs) were microinjected in the nucleus (top) and cytoplasm with CMV-driven, GFP-expressing plasmids containing either no additional sequences (open bars), the SV40 enhancer (striped bars), or the flk-1 promoter (shaded bars). Eight hours after injection, the cells were visualized for GFP expression by fluorescence microscopy. Whereas all three plasmids supported GFP expression when delivered into the nucleus of all three cell types, only the SV40 enhancer mediated nuclear import and gene expression in all cells when injected into the cytoplasm. As predicted, the flk-1 promoter caused import and expression only in cells in which transcription factors necessary for its expression and import were made, namely endothelial cells. If a viewer stares at a flag with green-and-black stripes and black stars on an orange background for about 30 seconds and then quickly looks at a white paper or white wall, our red, white, and blue flag will appear. Chemical changes in retina molecules make this happen. [Pg.74]
