Green chemistry educational programs

The project had funding from the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation Special Grant Program in the Chemical Sciences, the ACS/EPA Green Chemistry Educational Materials Development Project, and the University of Scranton. 

Criteria that are used in professional advancement decisions include publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at professional meetings. Forty-nine percent of respondents have disseminated materials beyond their own classrooms in a variety of ways. Significant numbers of those who have done so have published woric in peer-reviewed journals (32%), and almost twice as many gave oral presentations of their work at professional meetings (63%). An important component of green chemistry education is the involvement of students in the research programs of faculty members. Material was also distributed by students at professional meetings, primarily as poster presentations. 

In the next portion of the workshop, speakers and panel members focused on effective green chemistry and engineering educational programs, materials, and teaching tools, including computer software. The session started with talks by four main speakers, followed by four panel speakers.

Scholarly activity is typically defined by the priorities of the individual institution. Some institutions may accept pedagogical development work as scholarly activity within the parameters of tenure and/or promotion portfolios. Other institutions may only accept results from the more traditionally defined research programs for similar decisions. The practice of green chemistry allows scientists at all types of institutions to further their careers in ways that enhance the mission of their own institutions. The focus of this section is on scholarly work in the development of green educational materials and on the connection between the development of these materials and the professional enhancement of faculty researchers. 

The Workshop on Science Education and Green Chemistry (see Fig. 4) discussed the need for workshops and other educational programs to foster development of alternative energy sustainability and Green Chemistry disposal of chemical waste discussion of scientific method and ethics of science in the Middle East strategic plans to attract students to scientific careers and to educate scientists from multiple disciplines in the fields of pharmacology, toxicology, pharmacy, and clinical chemistry.
