Gravity coating

Air-bubble entrapment may occur in the case of a gravity-appHed continuous coating over an impermeable substrate. Bubbles may also be caused by moisture vaporization from the substrate. Remelting of the coating may minimize the bubble defects. Curtain coating equipment of this design is capable of operation at substrate speeds up to 500 m /min. 

Global consumption of thermoplastic mbbers of all types is estimated at about 600,000 t/yr (51). Of this, 42% was estimated to be consumed in the United States, 39% in Western Europe, and 19% in Japan. At present, the woddwide market is estimated to be divided as follows styrenic block copolymers, 48% hard polymer/elastomer combinations, 26% thermoplastic polyurethanes, 12% thermoplastic polyesters, 4% and others, 9%. The three largest end uses were transportation, 23% footwear, 18% and adhesives, coatings, etc, 16%. The ranges of the hardness values, prices, and specific gravities of commercially available materials are given in Table 4. 

In the lower region of the unsaturated zone, immediately above the water table, is the capillary fringe, where water is drawn upward by capillary attraction. Above the capillary fringe, moisture coats the solid surfaces of the soil or rock particles. If the liquid coating becomes too thick to be held by surface tension, a droplet will pull away and be drawn downward by gravity. The fluid can also evaporate and move through the air space in the pores as water vapor. 

The hardware used for the hydrogenation of benzene is shown in Figure 4—2. The basic parts are three or four reactors in a series plus a separation section at the end. The reactors are vessels filled with catalysts in the form of charcoal or alumina pellets that are coated with one of the above metals. The catalyst is packed loosely enough that the feed can flow through, top to bottom, by gravity.
