Grande Paroisse

The vapor-phase process of SocifitH Chemique de la Grande Paroisse for production of nitroparaffins employs propane, nitrogen dioxide, and air as feedstocks (34). The yields of nitroparaffins based on both propane and nitrogen dioxide are relatively high. Nitric oxide produced during nitration is oxidized to nitrogen dioxide, which is adsorbed in nitric acid. Next, the nitric dioxide is stripped from the acid and recirculated. 

Process Licensors. Some of the well-known nitric acid technology licensors are fisted in Table 3. Espindesa, Grande Paroisse, Humphreys and Glasgow, Rhfyne Poulenc, Uhde, and Weatherly are all reported to be licensors of weak acid technology. Most weak acid plant licensors offer extended absorption for NO abatement. Espindesa, Rhfyne Poulenc, Weatherly, and Uhde are also reported (53,57) to offer selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology.

The nitrogen fertilizer sector in Western Europe suffers from 1) overcapacity and 2) a high level of imports from Eastern Europe and elsewhere. Atofina is planning to withdraw from the fertilizer business altogether - once they have sorted out the consequences of the September, 2001 explosion at Grande Paroisse s AZF ammonium nitrate plant at Toulouse, France (which killed 30 people)149. 

The AZF pipe reactor process from La Grande Paroisse was combined with the fluidized dram granulator process from Kaltenbach-Thiiring S.A. The design melt concentration from the plant is 92% with 94% being achievable. The steam from the process is used to preheat the nitric acid feed and to vaporize the ammonia feed229. 

Between mergers and acquisitions, the structure of the fertilizer industry in Western Europe was spectacularly pared down. A few giants emerged to dominate the market. In France, there was CdF Chimie, later to be known as ORKEM, which had just taken a 70 percent stake in Air Liquide s subsidiary La Grande Paroisse, and Cofaz, which was taken over by Norsk Hydro in Western Germany, there was BASF and Ruhr Stickstoff in Britain, ICI and Norsk Hydro, which bought up Fisons in Italy, ANIC and Montedison s subsidiary Fertimont in Holland, DSM s UKF and Norsk Hydro NSM in Finland, Kemira, which took over both Britain s Lindsay and its Kesteven facilities. 

Grande Paroisse A process for making nitric acid by oxidizing ammonia claimed to be self-sufficient in power. 

In general, the catalysts contain varying quantities of the oxides of aluminum, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and silicon as promoters. Patents recommend adding sodium [243], beryllium [244], vanadium [245], uranium [246], or platinum [247]. Reference [248] describes cesium-containing catalysts. Catalysts patented by Lummus [249] and Ammonia Casale [250] contain cerium as additional promoter. ICI [251] has developed a cobalt-containing catalyst, as has Grande Paroisse [252]. 

Other designs were used by BASF [844], Casale [844], Chemico, Grand Paroisse [843], ICl [867], Uhde [844], and others.
