Grain strengthening

Hard grains strengthen the matrix in ordinary concretes and in other structural composites. In materials used as insulation layers on building walls or for various non-structural purposes the lightweight and porous grains are applied or systems of pores are created. [Pg.18]

An important example of an MMC in situ composite is one made by directional solidification of a eutectic alloy. The strength, (, of such an in situ metal-matrix composite is given by a relationship similar to the HaH-Petch relationship used for grain boundary strengthening of metals ... [Pg.200]

In addition to these principal alloying elements, which provide soHd solution strengthening and/or precipitation strengthening, wrought alloys may contain small amounts of titanium and boron [7440-42-8J, B, for control of ingot grain size, and ancillary additions of chromium, manganese, and zirconium to provide dispersoids. AH commercial alloys also contain iron and siUcon. [Pg.121]

Demonstrations (a) Atomix (to show grain boundaries), (b) Model of dispersion strengthening. Take piece of PMMA sheet == 2.5 mm thick and = 7 cm square. Glue four PMMA strips of section =7X7 mm on top of the sheet to form a tray = 7 mm deep. Cut six = 7-mm lengths of an = 6-mm-diameter PMMA rod. Glue the ends of these to... [Pg.291]
