Animal experiments have shown that gold dust is not carcinogenic to rats. However, subcutaneous implantation of gold sheets was able to induce tumors.

Rutherford and his students set up an experiment where they bombarded very thin gold sheet with a particles (emanating from radium) and observed the trajectory of the a particles. 

There are many techniques available to characterize compounds. Indeed, in polymorphism studies it is advisable to identify the modifications present by more than one technique. In 1985, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) indicated (The Gold Sheet) that the principal physicochemical techniques (in their approximate order of usefulness) that could be used to characterize polymorphs should be (Poulson 1985)...

It is well known that contact metal-polymers for many systems can be interpreted as Schottky barriers [55-57] or heterojunction [58, 59]. To test the influence of gold contact on the chitin dielectric spectra, a nonsymmetrical contact array was prepared in the following manner a circular chitin film was covered on one side with a piece of gold sheet with a small circular orifice in the center during gold-sputtering. The other side of the film was totally gold-sputtered. This way a top surface available for electrode contact is circa 0.008 cm. The bottom surface area is circa 0.75 cm. Because of contact surface area differences, the current depends on the properties of the top electrode.
