Gold nanoshells

When using nanoshells tuned to an absorbance at 820 nm, Hirsch et al. achieved the photothermal ablation of cultivated tumor cells by irradiation using near-IR laser light at 820nm in vitro [25]. When this system was applied to in vivo tumor therapy, the laser light irradiation of solid tumors inoculated in mice treated with the nanosheUs caused an increase in the temperature of the irradiation site, although a minimal increase was detected in the absence of nanoshell treatment. [Pg.283]

In addition, irreversible tissue damage was observed at the site treated with the nanoshells and laser-irradiated [25]. The same group also reported a photothermal therapeutic effect on solid tumors in mice when they injected PEG-modified gold [Pg.283]

Gold Nanoshells, which are actually a gold shell surrounding a semiconductor that can be irradiated when reaching their target. This heats the nanoshell, which in turn kills the cancer cells. [Pg.33]

Gold is a metal that continues to be precious in the market place, in exploration, in medicine and in science and technology (1). Its unique chemical properties ensure that it continues to be researched and applied in many established and in many new fields, including the treatment of arthritis (2), as advanced biocompatible materials in medicine (3,4) in the nanoengineering of optical properties as gold nanoshells (5) and in biosensing (6). [Pg.68]

One of the most well-known applications is the use of gold nanoshells with localized heating for the targeted destruction of malignant cancer cells, an approach that involves minimal side effects (Lane and Kalil, 2005). [Pg.454]
