The size of metal nanoparticles obviously plays also a significant role considering the interaction with biosystems. The 1.4 nm gold nanoclusters interact irreversibly with DNA due to an extremely stable fixation in the major groves. These findings may lead to the development of novel cancer drugs, as can be concluded from a series of cell experiments. [Pg.19]

Density Functional Theory (DFT) has shown that low-coordinated sites on the gold nanoparticles can adsorb small inorganic molecules such as O2 and CO, and the presence of these sites is the key factor for the catal5dic properties of supported gold nanoclusters. Other contributions, induced by the presence of the support, can provide parallel channels for the reaction and modulate the final efficiency of Au-based catalysts. Also these calculations extended for the adsorption of O and CO on flat and... [Pg.97]

The capacitance of the cluster was calculated from a fit of the experimental data at 90 K to be 3.9 x 10 F. This value, which is very sensitive toward residual charges and nearby background charges, is close to the value of the microscopic capacitance, which was determined earlier by temperature-dependent impedance measurements [21]. Furthermore these results are found to be in good agreement with the capacitance data obtained on the above-mentioned gold nanoclusters on a XYL-modified Au(l 1 1) surface [13,22]. [Pg.111]

Bates et al. reported the construction and characterization of a gold nanoparticle wire assembled using Mg -dependent RNA-RNA interactions for the future assembly of practical nanocircuits [31]. They used magnesium ion-mediated RNA-RNA loop-receptor interactions, in conjunction with 15 nm or 30 nm gold nanoclusters derivatized with DNA to prepare self-assembled nanowires. A wire was deposited between lithographically fabricated nanoelectrodes and exhibited non-linear activated conduction by electron hopping at 150-300 K (Figure 16). [Pg.116]

Though most of the catalysts discussed here are homogeneous, monoatomic species, it is possible to catalyze alkyne hydrosilylation by nanoparticles and polyatomic clusters.46 47 Recently, a report on this topic demonstrated the feasibility of using gold nanoclusters supported on alumina as a catalyst for alkyne hydrosilylation.48... [Pg.796]

The spectra of silver and gold nanoclusters are intense and distinct (Table 4). They are thus particularly suitable to detect the evolution of a cluster composition during the construction of a bimetallic cluster in mixed solution. The system studied by pulse radiolysis was the radiolytic reduction of a mixed solution of two monovalent ions, the cyano-silver and the cyano-gold ions Ag(CN)2 and Au(CN)2 (Fig- 7) [66]. Actually, the time-resolved observation demonstrated a two-step process. First, the atoms Ag and Au are readily formed after the pulse and coalesce into an alloyed oligomer. However, due to... [Pg.589]

A recent contribution reported by Aoshima and Tsukuda showed the aerobic oxidation of alcohols such as benzyl alcohol catalyzed by gold nanoclusters. These stable and durable clusters of less than 4 nm were prepared using thermosensitive vinyl ether star polymers previously obtained by living cationic polymerization. [Pg.479]
