Anionic nucleophiles provide valuable and versatile routes for the preparation of C-glycosides. However, the most extensively used technologies lie within the chemistry of Lewis acid-mediated reactions of carbohydrates with unsaturated hydrocarbons and derivatives thereof. In the next series of examples, reactions of sugars and sugar derivatives with olefins and their silyl-, stannyl-, and aluminum derivatives are discussed. [Pg.297]

Each of the sections thus far has dealt with methods used in the conversion of natural sugars, and derivatives thereof, to C-glycosides. Deviating from this trend, this section addresses the formation of C-glycosides from non-carbohydrate substrates. Specifically, the formation of the sugar ring is the focus of the chemistry discussed. Several methods for the execution of this approach are... [Pg.343]

Saponins are a family of glycosides (sugar derivatives) widely distributed in plants. Each saponin consists of a sugar moiety bound to a sapogenin (either a steroid or a triterpene). The immunostimulatory properties of the saponin fraction isolated from the bark of Quillaja (a tree) has been long recognized. Quil A (which consists of a mixture of related saponins) is used as an adjuvant in selected veterinary vaccines. However, its haemolytic potential precludes its use in human vaccines. Research efforts continue in an attempt to identify individual saponins (or derivatives thereof) that would make safe and effective adjuvants for use in human medicine. [Pg.415]

Similar to glycosides, anhydro derivatives involving the anomeric oxygen, which can be considered as internal glycosides, can also be cleaved by a Lewis acid in the presence of a thiol, or a TMS-derivative thereof, to give thioglycosides. Examples with 1,2- and 1,6-anhydro... [Pg.675]

Their reactions closely resemble those of 1,6-anhydrohexoses (compare Sect. IV) for the glycosyl group thereof, all reactions common for glycosides can be performed. The difference in the rate of hydrolysis of the 1,6-anhydride and the glycosidic bond permits a partial hydrolysis of 1,6-anhydro derivatives of oligosaccharides, leading to the... [Pg.161]
