The molecule was first discovered as a 62 kDa foctor in excretory/secretory products (ES-62) of Acanthocheilonema viteae, a filarial nematode of rodents in 1989 by Harnett et ah It was also identified in other filarial nematode species that can cause severe human morbidity, such as Wuchereria bancrojii, Brugia malayi and Onchocerca volvulus. ES-62 is a phosphorylcholine (PC) containing glycoprotein that has been widely investigated as an immunomodulatory molecule. The active native molecule of ES-62 contains PC moieties that are modified by posttranslational processes. ... [Pg.99]
