Glutathione, interaction with

Very interesting mechanism of the enhanced glutathione antioxidant activity in the presence of SOD was offered by Winterbourn [227]. She pointed out that the interaction of all free radicals with glutathione resulted in the formation of superoxide as the only final active species a free radical sink. Therefore, the mixture of glutathione together with SOD may be considered as a universal scavenger of free radicals of any structure. 

One method for the labeling of liposomes with chelator, hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (HMPAO) was developed by Phillips et al. (16). Lipophilic HMPAO enters the liposome where it interacts with glutathione and becomes converted to the hydrophilic form, which is trapped in the liposome. Glutathione is also implicated in the removal of toxic metabolites from the analgesic paracetamol (USA acetaminophen).
