Glucuronic acid cycle

Many reactions involved in this pathway are omitted. The point of origin of the glucuronic acid cycle from UDPG is indicated (see Fig. 3). The metabolism of pyruvate may proceed in any of several different directions, viz., amino acids, fatty acids, sterols, steroids, and the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Specific enzymes catalyze each conversion indicated by arrows. Broken arrows indicate that several steps are involved. [Pg.33]

The increased /3-glucuroiiidase activity in serum of patients with diabetes mellitus has to be referred to as an insulin-dependent metabolic pathway of glucose degradation (Dubach and Josech-Locher, 1968) and it is also postulated by other workers that activity of the enzyme is increased due to operation of an insulin-insensitive glucose metabolism through the glucuronic acid cycle (Miller el al., 19fi6c). [Pg.550]
