Gluconates

Colourless crystals m.p. I25°C, soluble in water and alcohol. In aqueous solution forms equilibrium with its lactones. Gluconic acid is made by the oxidation of glucose by halogens, by electrolysis, by various moulds or by bacteria of the Acetobacter groups. 

Gluconic acid and other hydroxy acids act similarly. Sequestering agents are used extensively, e.g. for preventing deleterious catalytic effects of traces of Fe or Cu and in analysis. 

The cyclization of pentaacetyl-o-gluconic thioamide with chloroacetone and of pentaacetyl-D-galactonic acid thioamide with phenacyl bromide give the corresponding 4-substituted 2-(D-galactopentaacetoxypentyl)-thiazoles (27) (660) but in low yield (23 to 27%) (Scheme 13). The products may be deacetylated in the usual way. These compounds are interesting from a pharmacological point of view.

In this experiment phosphate is determined by singlecolumn, or nonsuppressed, ion chromatography using an anionic column and a conductivity detector. The mobile phase is a mixture of n-butanol, acetonitrile, and water (containing sodium gluconate, boric acid, and sodium tetraborate).

Precautions in Handling. Ammonium bifluoride, like all soluble fluorides, is toxic if taken internally. Hydrofluoric acid bums may occur if the material comes in contact with moist skin. Ammonium bifluoride solutions should be thoroughly washed from the skin with mildly alkaline soap as soon as possible however, if contact has been prolonged, the affected areas should be soaked with 0.13% solution of Zephiran chloride, or 0.2% Hyamine 1622 (Lonza, Inc.) or calcium gluconate, the treatment recommended for hydrofluoric acid bums. If any of these solutions come in contact with the eyes, they should be washed with water for at least 10 min and a physician should be consulted. 

If ingestion occurs, dilute solutions of calcium compounds (calcium lactate, calcium gluconate, etc) or a large amount of milk followed by magnesium sulfate should be adrninistered (63,64).
