Glucocorticoids lactation

Lactation Glucocorticoids are excreted in breast milk. It is not known whether inhaled corticosteroids are excreted in breast milk, but it is likely. 

Somatrem and somatropin are contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to somatropin or sensitivity to beii2yl alcohol, and tliose witli epiphyseal closure or underlying cranial lesions. The drug is used cautiously in patients witli tliyroid disease or diabetes, and during pr iancy (Piregnancy Category C) and lactation. Excessive amounts of glucocorticoids may decrease response to somatropin. 

Cortisol, the major glucocorticoid, functions to increase the glucose and glycogen concentrations in the body. This is accomplished by the conversion of lactate and amino acids from body proteins into glucose and glycogen. The reactions take place in the liver under the influence of cortisol. 

Hypoxic stress induced by exposing adult rabbits to a simulated altitude of 7,000 m for 6 h increased glucocorticoid levels in plasma by 11 % whereas in erythrocytes was 55 % after hypoxia (Sridharan etal. 1991). Plasma reduced glutathione (GSH), lactate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.27) and isocitric dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.41) activities increased and aspartate aminotransferase activity was depressed after hypoxic stress.
