The proposed ribbon-like conformation for the crystalline polysaccharide is very similar to that of the cellulose chain which is also almost completely extended. Although (1 3)-a-D-glucan is soluble in aqueous alkali, hydrazine and N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide, it is insoluble in water or common organic solvents. It is probably a good structural material for cell walls since its mechanical properties will not be seriously affected by water.
