As slated before, hypothermia and other cold injuries can be prevented wearing sufScient winter clothing including head protection, gloves, mittens, and insulated... [Pg.293]

It is easier to understand this kind of stereoisomer if we think about some everyday objects that are chiral. One example of a chiral object is a hand. (In fact, the term chiral is derived from the Greek word for hand, kheir.) A left hand and a right hand are enantiomers—they are nonsuperimposable mirror images. Other examples of everyday objects that are chiral are feet, gloves, golf clubs, screws, and handwriting. We say that all of these objects exhibit handedness. Objects that are achiral (not chiral) include socks, some types of mittens, baseball bats, screwdrivers, blank paper, and pencils. [Pg.221]

Within the realm of apparel there is the American Knit Handwear Association, Inc., of Gloversville, N. Y. Monthly production and foreign trade information is assembled on knitted gloves and mittens, knit glove and mitten linings, and slipper sox. Annual sales data are issued to members. [Pg.25]

A mitten gauntlet of the fifteenth century is shown in Fig. 2. This can be made in one piece, with the exception of the thumb shield, which is separate. The thumb shield is attached to the thumb of an old glove which is fastened with round headed nails on the inside of the gauntlet. [Pg.10]

FIGURE 32.22 Sketches of the three types of gloves used by SCUBA divers (a) a mitten is warmest but has the poorest function (b) compromise glove provides warmth and allows diver to achieve the prehension patterns of Keller et al. (1947) (c) standard glove with individual fingers provides the least warmth but the most function. [Pg.855]

In advanced labs you are also more likely to encounter very cold materials, usually in the form of chunks of dry ice or liquid nitrogen. The potential for very rapid frostbite is considerable and these cold materials must always be handled with care. Gloves or mittens specifically designed for use with cold substances are available and should always be used when handling dry ice or using liquid nitrogen or liquid helium where the chance for a spiU is possible. [Pg.434]

Sleeves When protection must extend over the arms, workers may need special sleeves. Sleeves may cover the wrist and forearm only. Some extend to the elbow or to the shoulder. Some have gloves and mittens attached. Like gloves and mittens, there is a wide range of materials for sleeves. [Pg.405]

If fine manual dexterity is not required, gloves should be used below 40°F for light work and below 20°F for moderate work. For work below 0°F, mittens should be used. Felt-lined, rubber-bottomed, leather-topped boots with removable felt insoles are best suited for heavy work in the cold. Almost 50 percent of body heat is lost through the head. A wool-knit cap or a liner under a hard hat reduces excessive heat loss. [Pg.335]

Clothing (raincoat warm clothing, hat, mittens/ gloves comfortable boots/shoes). [Pg.100]
