Gloves extractables

Extracts of gloves, extracts of foliar dislodgeable residue and absolute foliar residues, and filters containing thiophanate-methyl were analyzed by reversed-phase HPLC and ultraviolet detection at 254 nm (Engel, 1988). The LOD was 50 mg/L for extracts of filters and gloves, and 10 mg/L for leaf samples. Recovery was > 90%, and the "between days" CV of the analytical chemical method was < 5%.

Latex gloves extracts enriched in the hydrophobic allergens that are most often seen in patients with spina bifida were obtained by selective precipitation, whereas HIC produced extracts enriched in the hydrophilic allergens commonly foxmd in health care workers. The health care workers had positive SPTs to glove extracts from internal surfaces and to the hydrophilic allergen-enriched extracts. 

The solid is separated by filtration and the filtrate is extracted with three 150-ml. portions of ether. Caution Gloves should be worn when handling this solution because of the large amount of cyanide it contains.) The solid is dissolved in ether and this solution is combined with the extracts. The combined ethereal solutions are washed with water and dried over 5 g. of sodium sulfate. Removal of the solvent by distillation leaves crude ferrocenyl-acetonitrile as a solid or as an oil that crystalli/.es on being scratched. I he nitrile is dissolved in about 200 ml. of boiling... 

Tandem MS (DFS equipped with EI/F1/FD source) in conjunction with off-line direct inlet HPLC-UV was used for separation and quantification of isomeric antioxidants, C22H30O2S (MW 358 Scheme 6.3), as antioxidants in THF extracts of surgeons gloves [232]. Collision activation MS enabled differentiation between the three isomeric structures (Fig. 6.20). Quantification was achieved by chromatographic analysis of the isomeric species, which are not distinguishable by MS. On-line LC-MS facilitates this kind of analysis. 

Using tandem MS (DFS with EI/FPFD source), electron impact and collision activation mass spectra of a THF extract of an orthopaedic polymer bandage identified IV-isopropyl-A/ -phcnyl-p-phenylenediamine (IPPD, m/z 226) as a cause for contact dermatitis [232]. Fl-MS of the extract of surgeons gloves indicated thio-bis (t-butylcresol) (m/z 358 343, after CID). 

Instantly Lionel picks it up, pulls open a drawer, and extracts a folded duster. He polishes the book and, holding it in the duster as a doctor might use surgical gloves, rewraps it in its sterile dressing and slips it back into its place. Only then does he say, So, what do you think of it ... 

For extraction of thiophanate-methyl, methanol (250 mL per glove) was added to the gloves, and, for extraction of methiocarb, 250 mL 60/40 (v/v%) methanol/water (per glove) was added to the gloves and adjusted to pH 4.5 with acetic acid. Gloves were then ultrasonicated for 10 min and extracted for 30 min by shaking at 200 strokes per min. 

Since all triacyglycerols (fats) are hydrophobic, they may be extracted from food samples using hydro-phobic solvents such as various ethers. Also, since fat content in processed foods is of critical concern to consumers, this technique has considerable real-world significance. Rubber gloves should be worn, and it is very important that there be no open flames in the laboratory. 

Air, gloves (surrogate for dermal exposure) Preconcentration from air sample using polyurethane foam (PUF). Soxhlet extraction of PUF or gloves with 5% ethyl ether/hexane. Addition of deuterated internal standards and concentration using K-D and nitrogen blowdown. Capillary GC/MS (can use multiple ion detection) 55 ng/m3 (5.5 nr sample) 73 (14% RSD) Hsu et al. 1988... 

Washing Procedures. The metal halide-pyridine reaction mixtures were washed in a sealed apparatus designed for continuous extraction in vacuo. Samples were transferred to and from the apparatus in a glove box under an atmosphere of argon. Washings were considered to be complete when the filtrate coming through the filter became colorless. 

Caution. The materials used in this synthesis are toxic and should be handled only in a hood by persons wearing gloves. The diethyl ether extraction must be done with peroxide-free diethyl ether to minimize the possibility of an explosion during the final evacuation.
