Perforation, globe

The eight most severely injured patients (15%) with Grade IV injuries had gross scarring, vascularization, and a permanent severe reduction in vision, bilateral in one case [22]. There were two cases of infectious keratitis with Staphylococcus aureus in patients with persistent corneal epithelial defects this progressed to globe perforation in one case. One patient underwent... [Pg.11]

The remainder of the exposed surface of the eye is covered by a thin mucosal layer known as conjunctiva. Mild irritation results in dilation of small blood vessels in the conjunctiva ( bloodshot ), pain, and a foreign body sensation. Chemosis, or swelling of the conjunctiva, is the typical response to more severe irritant or caustic exposure. Vision is not generally affected unless ocular perforation occurs or if scarring distorts the shape of the globe. [Pg.2365]

Profound loss of vision. Severe pain in eyes. Burning sensation of face/skin. Corneal ulceration or loss of corneal tissue. Perforation of globe. Skin burn. Severe corneal and/or skin bum. (Infrared laser, high dose.) Needs physician/PA evaluation. Evacuate as appropriate. [Pg.218]
