Globally, growth in beverage consumption remains solid and steady. In the last 5 years commercial beverage volumes have risen between 2.3 and 2.7% annually. The volume of RTD hot drinks, milk drinks, soft drinks and alcoholic drinks consumed reached an estimated 1.36 trillion (million million) litres in 2003 - a 2.5% increase on 2002 (Figure 2.2). Per capita consumption stood at 217 1 in 2003 (Figure 2.3). 

Global growth will further compound the societal challenge. Figure 4.13, shows chemical industry sales and population by country/region of the world. The arrows show the incremental sales that developing countries/regions would have if they were to reach one-half of the developed world s chemical intensity. 

In such a scheme, the global supply quantity of fossil in 2100 would become smaller than it was in 1990, thus attaining stabilisation of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration even in the face of global growth of energy use by a factor of four.

The expected evolution over 5 years (up to the year 2003) is on average a moderate global growth in the order of 1 to 1.5 % per year approximately for catalysis, from 1 to 2 % for adsorbents and desiccators and, for detergents, a slight decrease on average (-1-2 % per year) in the major developed countries (lower queintities of zeolite in detergents).
