The Committee was informed by the Secretariat that WHO continued to be an observer to the International Conference on Harmonisation (ICH) process, steering committee and global cooperation group. It serves as a link between the ICH and non-ICH parties. Concern was raised about the future status of WHO in ICH due to the lack of resources in WHO. During discussion, the Committee expressed concerns about the universal applicability of the so-called global standards and recommended that attempts by ICH and WHO to reconcile these standards should continue. 

The pre-ICDRA meeting on counterfeit drugs was mentioned and a followup meeting to the pre-ICDRA meeting was planned in order to discuss closer global cooperation in this area. 

The Steering Committee has set up a subcommittee, the Global Cooperation Group (GCG). Its objective is to facilitate making information available on ICH, ICH activities and ICH guidelines to any country or company that requests the information . The co-Chairpersons of the GCG are Dr Elaine Esber, Associate Director for Medical and International Affairs, CBER, EDA, and Dr Bert Spiker, Senior Vice President for Scientific and Medical Affairs, PhRMA. 

The international initiatives primarily arise from the United Nations promotion of global cooperation on issues relating to the environment and public health. There are several international treaties relating to the control of chemicals ... 

Inclusion of the SAE within the dialogue of the GCG (Global Cooperation Group)... 

Among the many deals, only a few may be mentioned here. Arkema and Ciba Specialty Chemicals signed a global cooperation agreement enabling Ciba to distribute Arkema s Pebax permanent antistatic agents. They are polyether block amides intended for use in ABS, polystyrene and PVC. The two companies are also co-operating in research and development in the same area. Ciba has also become the exclusive distributor outside Asia of Kanebo Chemical s silver-based antimicrobial products for polymers. They are said to be effective, safe and heat-resistant to over 200 °C.

The polymer industry should be an industry with intensive Research and Development. Polymer science is the most exciting and promising science, as there remains many unknown interdisciplinary areas to be explored.At the sametime, globalization of polymer technology will progress further. The importance of global cooperation with industries, academic and administrative sectors will increase steadily. 

For over 20 years Riccardo Ferro contributed to the MSIT Ternary Evaluation Program initiated at the Max-Planck-Institute fur Metallforschung. In ongoing global cooperations Riccardo Ferro has contributed to 200 of the about 4000 critical evaluations which this team has created so far. We all have greatly benefited from his critical contributions, his tutorial lead and warm hearted friendship.
