Glass transition structure

Material properties can be further classified into fundamental properties and derived properties. Fundamental properties are a direct consequence of the molecular structure, such as van der Waals volume, cohesive energy, and heat capacity. Derived properties are not readily identified with a certain aspect of molecular structure. Glass transition temperature, density, solubility, and bulk modulus would be considered derived properties. The way in which fundamental properties are obtained from a simulation is often readily apparent. The way in which derived properties are computed is often an empirically determined combination of fundamental properties. Such empirical methods can give more erratic results, reliable for one class of compounds but not for another. [Pg.311]

As the temperature is decreased, free-volume is lost. If the molecular shape or cross-linking prevent crystallisation, then the liquid structure is retained, and free-volume is not all lost immediately (Fig. 22.8c). As with the melt, flow can still occur, though naturally it is more difficult, so the viscosity increases. As the polymer is cooled further, more free volume is lost. There comes a point at which the volume, though sufficient to contain the molecules, is too small to allow them to move and rearrange. All the free volume is gone, and the curve of specific volume flattens out (Fig. 22.8c). This is the glass transition temperature, T . Below this temperature the polymer is a glass. [Pg.236]

There are a number of structural features which have a bearing on the value of the glass transition temperature. Since this temperature is that at which molecular rotation about single bonds becomes restricted, it is obvious that these features are ones which influence the ease of rotation. In the case of an amorphous polymer the glass transition temperature will define whether or not a material is glass-like or rubbery at a given temperature. If, however, the polymer will crystallise, rubbery behaviour may be limited since the orderly arrangement of molecules in the crystalline structure by necessity limits the chain mobility. Whereas the glass transition of a copolymer is usually intermediate between those of the corresponding homopolymers this is not commonly the case with the melting points. Figure 4.12 shows the effect of copolymerising hexamethylenesebacamide with hexamethyleneterephthalamide. Only when the monomer units are isomorphous, so that the molecules can take up the same structure, is there a linear relationship between melting point and composition (as with hexamethyleneadipamide and hexamethyleneterephthalamide). [Pg.72]

Polymers below the glass transition temperature are usually rather brittle unless modified by fibre reinforcement or by addition of rubbery additives. In some polymers where there is a small degree of crystallisation it appears that the crystallines act as knots and toughen up the mass of material, as in the case of the polycarbonates. Where, however, there are large spherulite structures this effect is more or less offset by high strains set up at the spherulite boundaries and as in the case of P4MP1 the product is rather brittle. [Pg.271]

Because of the low glass transition temperature it is not possible to make clear film, stable at room temperature, by quenching. Some improvement in clarity may be obtained by cold rolling as this tends to dispose the crystal structure into layers (see Chapter 6). [Pg.543]

Whilst the Tg of poly(dimethylsiloxane) rubbers is reported to be as low as -123°C they do become stiff at about -60 to -80°C due to some crystallisation. Copolymerisation of the dimethyl intermediate with a small amount of a dichlorodiphenylsilane or, preferably, phenylmethyldichlorosilane, leads to an irregular structure and hence amorphous polymer which thus remains a rubber down to its Tg. Although this is higher than the Tg of the dimethylsiloxane it is lower than the so that the polymer remains rubbery down to a lower temperature (in some cases down to -100°C). The Tg does, however, increase steadily with the fraction of phenylsiloxane and eventually rises above that of the of the dimethylsilicone rubber. In practice the use of about 10% of phenyldichlorosilane is sufficient to inhibit crystallisation without causing an excess rise in the glass transition temperature. As with the polydimethylsilox-anes, most methylphenyl silicone rubbers also contain a small amount of vinyl groups. [Pg.833]

When the temperamre is lowered, rubbers become stiff and brittle. All rubbers eventually stiffen to a rigid, amorphous glass at the glass transition temperature (Tg). This temperature also indicates the low-temperature service limit of the rubber. Tg values are dependent on the structure, degree of cross-linking (vulcanization) and isomeric composition of the rubber. [Pg.580]

Polyisobutylene has a similar chemical backbone to butyl rubber, but does not contain double carbon-carbon bonds (only terminal unsaturation). Many of its characteristics are similar to butyl rubber (ageing and chemical resistance, low water absorption, low permeability). The polymers of the isobutylene family have very little tendency to crystallize. Their strength is reached by cross-linking instead of crystallization. The amorphous structure of these polymers is responsible for their flexibility, permanent tack and resistance to shock. Because the glass transition temperature is low (about —60°C), flexibility is maintained even at temperatures well below ambient temperature. [Pg.584]

Urethane structural adhesives have a morphology that is inverse to the toughened epoxy just described. The urethanes have a rubber continuous phase, with glass transition temperatures of approximately —50°C. This phase is referred to as the .soft segment . Often, a discontinuous plastic phase forms within the soft segment, and that plastic phase may even be partially crystalline. This is referred to as the hard segment . A representation of the morphology is shown in Fig. 3 [34]. [Pg.773]

The two-component urethane structural adhesives are among the most difficult to characterize, simply because of the widely varying properties that are possible. These adhesives may be rigid plastics similar in modulus to standard epoxy adhesives, with glass transition temperatures of the cured adhesive being approximately 60°C. [Pg.795]

In addition to the normal methylene linkage formation involved in polymerization with both resoles and novolaes, other, usually less desirable, eondensation by-products are also seen in novolac synthesis. Among these are benzodioxanes and dibenzyl ethers. The reaction pH has significant effect on the relative amounts produced. Fig. 15 shows typical structures for these by-products. When such byproducts are present, the meaning of the molar ratio changes and variability with respect to molecular weight development, glass transition point, and solubility may be seen. Adhesive strength is evaluated at room temperature as well as at the extreme temperatures of —65°F and 180°F. Aircraft structure can reach —65°F at cruise altitudes and 180°F on the ground in a hot, sunny location. The types of toughened epoxies commonly used for metal bond adhesives have glass transition temperatures not much greater than 200°F, so properties fall off drastically at higher temperatures. [Pg.1147]
