Glass coatings study

A study of the surface helium, neon, and argon in lunar rocks illustrates the sensitivity of the laser microprobe [3]. Lunar rock 12054 was collected from the surface of the moon with known orientation. This rock contains a glass coating which covers the face including a crack. As a result, part of the surface in the crack is never exposed directly to the sun whereas other parts are directly exposed. We made a traverse across the surface analyzing the gas from individual laser pits. Four types of sites were analyzed in this study. [Pg.149]

For combined studies involving spectroscopic methods, in particular, the possibility of using optically transparent electrodes made from glass coated with indium-tin-oxide (ITO) or similar materials, e.g., Sn02/F or Sn02/Sb, should be taken into account (see Chap. Chapter n.6). However, because of their chemical nature, studies of reduction reactions are naturally limited with such electrodes. [Pg.226]

Several studies have been carried out on the poisoning by siloxanes in the fields of gas turbines and gas engines [14, 17, 35-37]. Microcrystalline silica, a very firm substance which has similar properties to that of glass coats and grazes metal surfaces, e.g., the spark plugs, cylinders, valves, and emission catalyst with white deposits and acts as a thermal insulator. [Pg.153]

XPS has been used in almost every area in which the properties of surfaces are important. The most prominent areas can be deduced from conferences on surface analysis, especially from ECASIA, which is held every two years. These areas are adhesion, biomaterials, catalysis, ceramics and glasses, corrosion, environmental problems, magnetic materials, metals, micro- and optoelectronics, nanomaterials, polymers and composite materials, superconductors, thin films and coatings, and tribology and wear. The contributions to these conferences are also representative of actual surface-analytical problems and studies [2.33 a,b]. A few examples from the areas mentioned above are given below more comprehensive discussions of the applications of XPS are given elsewhere [1.1,1.3-1.9, 2.34—2.39]. [Pg.23]

Biocorrosion of stainless steel is caused by exopolymer-producing bacteria. It can be shown that Fe is accumulated in the biofilm [2.62]. The effect of bacteria on the corrosion behavior of the Mo metal surface has also been investigated by XPS [2.63]. These last two investigations indicate a new field of research in which XPS can be employed successfully. XPS has also been used to study the corrosion of glasses [2.64], of polymer coatings on steel [2.65], of tooth-filling materials [2.66], and to investigate the role of surface hydroxyls of oxide films on metal [2.67] or other passive films. [Pg.26]
