Ginger Tincture

Juices extracts (liquorize), spirits (orange, lemon), syrups (black currant), tinctures (ginger), and aromatic waters Mineral pigments (iron oxides), natural colorants, anthocyanins, carotenoids, chlorophylls riboflavine, red beetroot extract, and caramel synthetic organic dyes azo compounds... 

Eventually it became clear that the syndrome was associated with the use of an extract of Jamaica ginger, normally sold for medicinal purposes. Remedies like this were popular at the time and some of them were well known, for example the Vegetable Compound of Lydia Pinkham ( Lily the Pink). The ginger was dissolved in up to 90 per cent alcohol to produce a syrup or tincture (for example, Tinctura Zingiberis was 90 per cent alcohol). A few drops in water would usually be taken, and the extract was sold in pharmacies in 2 oz bottles. Popularly known as Jake , the remedy had been in use since the nineteenth century for the treatment of minor ailments such as colds, period pains, headaches, and flatulence and to aid digestion. ... 

Ginger is commercially available in the United States as the dried powdered root, syrup, tincture, capsules, tablets, tea, oral solution, powder for oral solution, as a spice, and in candy, ice cream, and beer (3). 

Compound Tincture of Black Pepper, This is prepared with 30 parts oapsmums 40 parts block pepper 15 ports each grains of paradise, cinnamon, ginger, and calamus 15 parts by measure acetate of potassa, and 60 parts alcohol. 

Tincture of Ginger. Moisten 8 troy ounces ginger, in fine powder, with 2 fluid ounces alcohol pack it firmly in a cylindrical percolator, and displace with alcohol, 2 pints of tincture. (U. S. Ph.)... 

Squire s Elixir. Opium, 1 ounce camphor. 1 ounce spirit of aniseed (compound), 4 pints tincture of ser entaria, 1 pint water, 4 pints tincture ot ginger, 4 ounce. Some receipts add a little aurum mus-ivum. 

Bad way s Benovating Besolv-ent. A vinous tincture of ginger ami cardamom, sweetened with sugar, (ffuyer and Jaeohsen.)... 

Treatment of Diarrhea in Infants. Dr. Smith recommends the following prescriptions, if tho bowels are rather loose, with dark, slimy, offensive stools. Tincture of opium, 8 minims castor oil, 1 drachm syrup of ginger and nmcilago of acacia, each 1 ounce. A tea-spoonful 3 times daily. Dick s Cvire for Dyspepsia. Mix together i ounce bicarbunato of soda 2 drachms aromatic spirits of ammonia C drachms compound tincture of gentian 6 drachms tincture of henbane 2 drachms tincture of ngcr 3 drops creosote ounce ginger syrup, and 3 ounces water. A tabic-spoonful token after each meal will causo a cedy cure. 

Spans and Tweens have been used to overcome similar problems in the formulation of medicines for internal use. The solubilization of resinous components of tinctures such as benzoin and myrrh in aqueous vehicles and the incorporation of water-soluble ingredients into oily vehicles has been discussed by Stoklosa and Ohmart [230]. Gerding and Sperandio [229] give examples of mixtures of tinctures and fluid extracts which, on addition of polysorbate 20, will not precipitate on dilution. Cetomacrogol 1000 added in small amounts to opiate linctus of squill, syrup of ginger, compound mixtures of camphor, and of lobelia and stramonium has a similar clearing action [207].
