Giant definition

In his article mainly mode-locked tunable dye lasers are discussed. Giant pulse ruby lasers (3 nsec pulse halfwidth) have been successfully used to probe electron densities as a function of time in a rapidly expanding plasma 22). The electron lifetime in the conduction band can be determined with nanosecond semiconductor lasers. By absorption of the laser pulse the electrons in the semiconductor probe are excited into the conduction band, resulting in a definite conductivity. The mean lifetime is obtained by measuring the decrease of conductivity with time 26). [Pg.25]

Dehydrobufotenine There is a covalent bond formed between the dimethylated nitrogen atom and the indolic 4-position, by the theoretical removal of a molecule of hydrogen. It is no longer a simple tryptamine but as it is a commonly found component of the chemistry of several toads, and a few giant reeds as well, it is included here. It is, by definition, a quaternary amine salt. [Pg.125]

The rate of mass loss is proportional to T (Duncan et al. 1986). Thus, an analogue of HR diagram with neutrino luminosity versus neutrino effective temperature is desirable to represent numerical results. If we assume the structure of polytrope with N=3 and take account of the definition of the neutrino sphere, we can calculate a neutrino Hayashi-line analogously to that for red giant stars. We have shown that numerical results could be understandable if analyzed with appropriate concepts. [Pg.421]

A soliton is a giant solitary wave produced in canals by a cancellation of nonlinear and dispersive effects. The connection between aqueous solitons and tsunamis ("harbor waves") is not definitively established. In "doped" conducting polyacetylene, a neutral soliton is a collective excitation of a polyacetylene oligomer that has amplitude for several adjacent sites [57],... [Pg.479]

Involvement of sperm proteolytic enzymes in fertilization processes has a long history. Perhaps the first definitive observation that sperm proteases affected egg envelopes was that of Yamane in 1935. He demonstrated that an extract of rabbit sperm dispersed the cumulus cells and solubilized the zona pellucida (ZP) or egg envelope of the rabbit egg (1.). The presence of proteases in the sperm extract was presumed by analogy with the dispersing action of the trypsin activity in pancreatin. In 1939, Tyler obtained an extract from sperm of the giant keyhole limpet Meeathura crenulata which dissolved the egg envelope without affecting the egg itself. [Pg.211]

Fig. 7.8 also shows the results of a classical calculation and a quantum calculation that both confirm the prediction of the giant resonance based on the simple overlap criterion discussed above. The crosses in Fig. 7.8 are the results of classical Monte Carlo calculations. They were performed by choosing 200 different initial conditions in the classical phase space at Iq = 57. The ionization probabihty in this case was defined as the excitation probability of actions beyond the cut-off action Ic = 86. This definition is motivated by experiments that, due to stray fields and the particular experimental procedures, cannot distinguish between excitation above Ic > 86 and true ionization, i.e. excitation to the field-free hydrogen continuum. The crosses in Fig. 7.8 are close to the full line and thus confirm the model prediction. The open squares are the results of quantum calculations within the one-dimensional SSE model. The computations were performed in the simplest way, i.e. no continuum was... [Pg.201]

Conjunctival papillary changes are an integral component of GPC. Micropapillae, by definition, are smaller than 0.3 mm and are present in 80% of normal eyes. Macropapillae are 0.3 to 1.0 mm in size and are usually not a normal clinical presentation. Giant papillae are at least 1 mm in size and develop, separate from normal papillae, as part of the pathologic process of GPC. [Pg.563]

Michael Timothy s (212 Main St., b 603-595-9334) is definitely a standout. The chef concentrates on bringing in local produce to fill out his menu of upscale New American cuisine. The atmosphere is warm and intimate and the prices low enough to bring in the suburban crowd. Another standout among the chains is Giant Of Siam (5 E. Hollis St., b 603-595-2222). The eatery features Thai food in a simple, yet elegant environment. [Pg.29]
