Germination rate

The response of marine macrophytes on oil dispersion is dependent on the type of both oil and oil dispersant [292]. Germination inhibition of the marine macrophyte Phyllospora comosa was used to assess and compare the effects of oil dispersants and dispersed diesel fuel and crude oil combinations. The inhibition of germination by the water-soluble fraction of diesel fuel increased after adding all dispersants investigated. This contrasted with crude oil, in which the addition of some dispersants resulted in an enhanced germination rate. 

The influence of nitrogen fertilizer source on the germination rate of ergots placed on the ground in rye culture has been studied. Compared with calcium ammonium nitrate, application of calcium cyanamide reduced the germination of ergots and formation of perithecia by 40-50% (Mielke, 1993). 

A seed dressing method based on electrons was developed and tested by Lindner et al. (1996) and Schauder (2003) as a direct method to improve seed quality and remove/reduce seedborne disease inocula. Electron seed dressing effectively removed common bunt spores (Tilletia caries) and reduced bunt levels compared to untreated seeds in field trials. However, its efficacy against M. nivale has not, as yet, been confirmed. Since this technique has potentially negative effects on germination rates of seed, it is limited to surface treatments (Jahn, 2002 Jahn et al., 2005).

BOA was first discovered by Virtanen and Hietala in 195739 as an anti-Fusarium compound in 4-days-old rye seedlings. Following this, different research projects were conducted to find the antipest significance of this compound in nature.18,38,40,41 In recent years the biological activity studies of BOA have also focused on plant metabolism inhibitory activity. A major part of these studies was based on the germination rate and on the root and shoot growth measurements of the species tested. 

To obtain this composition, a metallic solvent is contacted with a silicon source at this temperature Ta during few hours. This leads to the saturation of the solvent in Si, at Xa concentration. Then, the silicon source is removed. If this liquid is brought into contact with a silicon substrate at this temperature, the equilibrium is not changed. However, when the solution is cooled down to Tb, the system presents two phases silicon solid phase appears and the new concentration of the liquid phase in Si becomes Xc. If the cooling process is slow (few Kelvin per minute or less), parasite germination rate within the solvent is close to zero and epitaxial deposition of silicon occurs only on the substrate.

Experiment Methods. Seeds of each alfalfa variety were soaked in distilled water for 2 h, blotted dry with filter paper to remove excess water, and then respectively transferred to distilled water, 0.5 % NaCl and 1 % NaCl solution. Seeds were germinated in duplicate at 25 1 C. SL was measured at 2, 4, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, and 144 h. The germination rate of alfalfa seeds were >95 % in the pre-experiment. SL was measured using a single photon monitor, Beckman-5801 (liquid scintillation counter) at constant temperature in the absence of light for 30 s. 

Neetoo et al. (2008) demonstrated that high-pressure processing (650 MPa, 15min) resulted in approximately 5-log reduction in the population of E. coli during alfalfa seed decontamination. The germination rate of high-pressure decontaminated seeds was identical to that of untreated seeds.
