Germanium compounds, heteroatom

Although no 73Ge NMR spectra of stable doubly bonded germanium compounds have been recorded, NMR chemical shift data for the heteroatom of the double bond are available these are listed in Table II. The chemical shift of the, sp2-hybridized carbon atom of dimesitylneopentylger-mene (entry 1, Table II), without any polar substituents, falls at 8 124.2.26 The chemical shifts of the boron-substituted sp2-hybridized carbon atoms of two stable germenes (entry 2, Table II) fall in the upfield region of the... 

There are a few isolated cases of the addition of amines, thiols, carboxylic acids, and a phosphorus ylide to doubly bonded germanium compounds. Again, the reactions are regioselective, with the nucleophilic portion of the weak acid adding to the germanium and the proton adding to the heteroatom.

Optical activity was first observed with organic compounds having one or more chiral carbon atoms (or centres) (i.e. a carbon substituted with four different groups). In the structures (1) to (17) the chiral carbons are specified with an asterisk. Subsequently compounds having chiral centres at suitably substituted heteroatoms (e.g. silicon, germanium, nitrogen, phosphorus, arsenic, sulphur, etc.) were also synthesised. Bortnikov et al243 also separated compounds containing bonds between 2 or 3 like or unlike heteroatoms (silicon, germanium, tin or sulphur) on columns of silanized Chromasorb W coated with 20% Apiezon L, 15% of polyoxyethylene glycol 20M or Reoplex 400, also by gas-solid chromatography on graphitized thermal carbon black with helium as carrier gas and a flame ionization or thermal conductivity detector.
