In German history, censorship unfortunately has been more of a rule than an exception. It was introduced by the Catholic Church in the form of the Inquisition. However, it was left to the well-known Austrian statesman Mettemich to perfect the system of suppressing freedom of speech by means of a comprehensive spy and surveillance apparatus. Neither the German Empire nor the Weimar Republic were particularly soft in their dealings with unwelcome literature,1 but the worst reputation was doubtless acquired by the Third Reich, which managed, within the twelve years of its existence, to black-list some 10,000 books. While these books were not burned, they did disappear from the shelves of bookstores, to be banished to library archives.2... 

Germany is about to knock out France, knock out Russia next, and then turn on Britain. If the United States is fast enough, we will go to war to save Britain. If we are not fast enough, we will find ourselves alone fighting the German empire with all the wealth of Europe behind it. You are free to be skeptical now, but every one of you will either join the armed forces or be drafted within a year or two. Think about that. 

Fritz was a child of the second German empire, the Kaiserreich, established just a few years after his birth. He breathed the intense nationalism of his time, and it seemed the most natural thing in the world. 

ON MAY 14, 1910, a gaggle of very rich Germans gathered at Wilhelmstrasse 63 in downtown Berlin. They d been called together by leaders of Prussia, the dominant state in the German empire. The fortunes of these men were built on steel, electrical equipment, chemicals, and banking.

Meanwhile, the 22 universities of the German Empire harbored 37,677 students in 1903, out of which 15,205 were in the philosophical faculty where science was taught (108). Ca. 1908, this number had grown to 47,000 students (109) and in 1911 it had reached 59,000 of which 10,000 hailed from Berlin (110).

Out of this feudal system, which has itself many of the important features of a confederacy, has grown the federal system, which constitutes the Germanic empire.
