Gentiana species

Gentian violet is a purple dye that is obtained from coal tar it is so called because its color resembles that of the flower and it has nothing to do with Gentiana species. [Pg.1506]

The oxidation product (32) of gentiatibetine (34), an alkaloid elaborated by numerous Gentiana species, has been synthesized (Scheme 3). Hantzsch reaction of crotonaldehyde with ) -aminocrotonate provided the pyridine (31) which upon treatpient with formaldehyde gave the desired product (32) together with the isomeric lactone (33). [Pg.64]

Of the triphenylmethane derivatives, gentian violet has been most often used in medical applications. It is a purple dye, so-called because its color resembles that of the gentian flower it has nothing to do with Gentiana species. It is a mixture of crystal violet (hexamethyl-para-rosaniline) 96% and methyl violet (tetramethyl- and pentamethyl-para-rosaniline). Methyl violet was first synthesized by Lauth in 1861 [15 ] after Perkins discovery of aniline dyes [16 ]. [Pg.481]

Gentianae radix, the dried rhizomes and roots of Gentiana lutea, has been used in folk medicine in many countries for long time [100]. Underground parts of G. scabra and eight allied species, commonly known as longdan in Chinese traditional medicine, have been used in the treatment of hepatic and cholesteric diseases [101]. [Pg.265]

Iridoids and secoiridoid glycosides reported from different species of Gentiana are shown in table 2. [Pg.269]

For example, the methanolic extract of Gentiana rhodantha Fr., a Chinese Gentianaceae species, was screened by LC/TSP-MS and LC/UV using our routine procedure for the Gentianaceae [24] in order to obtain rapid and precise information on its composition. [Pg.246]

The concerns stated for Gentiana lutea (see previous entry), though not specified in available references, may also be relevant to this species (McGuffin et al. 1997). [Pg.404]
