Genetic aspects

A rather different kind of genetic control, that of the IgE antibody response in mice, was reported by Levine (1971). Strains were found that showed a poor IgE antibody response to six different antigens but at least moderate titers of IgG antibody to some of these antigens. There seemed to be no dose effect. Breeding experiments showed that the genetic control is not linked to the MHC of the mouse and is influenced by more than one locus. [Pg.8]

In this chapter, we shall focus on the molecular aspects of amino acid transport and its regulation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Kinetic, biochemical and genetic aspects of the amino acid transport systems of eukaryotic microorganisms have been reviewed earlier [7,8]. [Pg.220]

In this section, the latest developments and recent publications on the biosynthesis of A9-THC and related cannabinoids as precursors are discussed. Special points of interests are the genetic aspects, enzyme regulation, and the environmental factors that have an influence on the cannabinoid content in the plant. Because of new and innovative developments in biotechnology we will give a short overview of new strategies for cannabinoid production in plant cell cultures and in heterologous organisms. [Pg.7]

It will only be by fully combining these clinical and genetic aspects that we will be able to begin delivering the real aims of the human genome project more effective medicines and treatments for the most common diseases. [Pg.346]

Pheromone identification is still difficult because the structure of unique compounds present in small amounts in mixtures of similar molecules has to be elucidated. This topic will be discussed in detail by Ando as well as by others, showing nicely the recent progress in analytical techniques. The following chapter by R. Jurenka deals with insect pheromone biosynthesis with special emphasis on lepidopteran pheromones and also covers genetic aspects. The subsequent chapter by C. Keeling et al. describes the hymenopteran semio-chemicals (bees and ants), describing pheromones and allelochemicals. The hymenoptera add a certain flavor to the scene, because now the complexity of social insects with their many interactions comes into play, as well as the multi-level (multi-trophic) signals used by parasitoids. [Pg.9]

Another obvious genetic aspect of toxicology has to do with the level in skin of melanin, a pigment that makes skin dark. Melanin levels vary widely with genotype. Melanin confers resistance to the effects of solar ultraviolet radiation, which is absorbed by DNA in skin cells, causing damage that in the worst-case results in deadly melanoma skin cancer. Skin melanin is a chromophore (a... [Pg.194]
