Rejection Rejection is defined in Background and Definitions. The highest-rejection membranes are those designed for single-pass production of potable water from the sea. The generally accepted criterion is 99.4 percent rejection of NaCl. Some membranes, notably cellulose triacetate fibers are rated even higher. A whole range of membranes is available as rejection requirements ease, and membranes with excellent chlorine resistance and hydrolytic stability can be made with salt rejection over 90 percent. [Pg.2036]

Definitive conclusions regarding the effect of structure on sensitivity are made difficult by the fact that polymer molecular weight and poly-dispersity varied considerably from sample to sample and, since we found a very strong dependence of Dg 5 on these parameters, specific structural effects are obscured. There are limited data on the chemical resistance of various oxide materials in the literature (Samsonov 1982, Ryshkewitch and Richerson 1985). Furthermore, many of the studies are concerned with solid, nonporous materials. Nevertheless, these may provide an indication of the general trends. Until a definitive and quantitative database of chemical stability of various inorganic membranes becomes available, some simple dissolution-type test methods using membrane samples may be employed on a comparative basis to estimate the extent of attack by a chemical under the application conditions.
